`Better colleges can become universities'

KOCHI, MARCH. 9. Colleges in Kerala need to orient themselves to become universities, said the vice-chairman of the University Grants Commission, V.N. Rajashekaran Pillai. At the inaugural address of the Prof. K.V. Thomas Endowment National Seminar here today, Prof. Pillai said that colleges in other States have already embarked upon the process.

He stressed on the need to enhancing the quality of higher education. He also said that the scope of studying basic sciences should be widened by introducing other subjects into the curriculum.

The two-day national seminar on `Recent Advances in Quantum Chemistry', is being organised by the Department of Chemistry, Sacred Heart College, Thevara, in honour of the Minister for Fisheries and Excise, K.V. Thomas, who was the former head of the Department of Chemistry.

As the chief guest on the occasion, Prof. Thomas said that the State has very few higher centres of excellence in higher education. A change is needed in this sector. There is also a move to make libraries and laboratories accessible to public, he said.

The head of the Department of Chemistry, M.T. Mathew, read the department's report on its activities. At the inaugural session, the Principal of the College, Joseph Poonely, welcomed the gathering. Prior General, Antony Kariyil, presided. Manager of the College, Father John Pynadath and Elizabeth Williams of the department spoke on the occasion.
