CHENNAI, MARCH 9. E.V.K.S. Elangovan, former working president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, today said he would initiate contempt proceedings against the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, for having raked up the Congress chief, Sonia Gandhi's citizenship issue even after the Supreme Court had ruled that she was an Indian. Taking exception to "personal references" made to Ms. Gandhi in the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's poll manifesto, Mr. Elangovan said the court had dismissed a petition filed by a lawyer questioning her citizenship. Mr. Elangovan, who appeared before the III Additional Sessions Judge in connection with a defamation complaint preferred by the Government against him, said Congress cadres would work for the victory of the Pattali Makkal Katchi in Pondicherry. "It is a settled matter now," he said when reporters asked about the allocation of the seat to the PMK. The defamation complaint, 16th against Mr. Elangovan so far, pertains to his statement, reported in The Hindu in April last, calling for imposition of President's rule in Tamil Nadu where Opposition leaders and the Press were being gagged. After counsel A.P. Suryaprakasam filed a petition seeking to dispense with further appearance of the Congress leader, the judge, Ramalingam, adjourned the matter to June 3.
