CHENNAI, MARCH 9. Corporates must pay greater attention to safety, health and environment (SHE) issues, according to M.S. Swaminathan, chairman, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation. Measures aimed at improving safety in the industrial units, health of the workforce and the environment were as important, to the companies, as those for achieving more growth and becoming competitive. Presenting the leadership and excellence award in SHE for 2003 of the Confederation of Indian Industry, southern region (CII-SR), he said such awards would motivate corporates to focus more on issues in the three areas. While Ashok Leyland, Brakes India and TVS Srichakra received the first three prizes respectively, the special commendation award went to MICO-Bosch. Fifteen other companies received the commendation award. A. Krishnaiah, heavy equipment operator at the Larsen and Toubro cement unit in Tadapatri, got the `spirit of safety' award. K.K.M. Kutty, chairman, CII-SR, said the award, instituted last year, was to recognise the best practices of companies in the area of SHE. Apart from serving as a forum to share their experiences, the award was also intended to motivate corporates to adopting high standards in SHE.
