Pakistan test-fires Shaheen-II

By B. Muraldhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, MARCH 9. Pakistan today test-fired a 2,000 km-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

A statement by the Musharraf Government said the test "reflects Pakistan's resolve to maintain minimum credible deterrence as the corner stone of its security policy."

The test was the first of the locally built Shaheen-II or Hatf-VI missile. "By the grace of Allah, all the planned technical parameters were successfully validated during the test fire," the statement said.

The Foreign Office spokesman, Masood Khan, had announced on Monday that neighbouring countries, including India, had been notified about the test as per the convention.
