KOCHI, MARCH. 9. A head constable attached to the Ernakulam AR Camp fainted while doing `extra parade' at the camp, this morning. Sources said that Thankappan (53), a driver with the Kochi City Police, was ordered to do extra parade as punishment for not having intimated higher officers when he extended his medical leave. He fainted at around 10-30 a.m. in the camp's ground while he was doing parade. Thankappan has been admitted to intensive care unit of the Ernakulam General Hospital. An office-bearer of the Kerala Police Association said that policemen with medical complaints and those aged above 50 years were usually exempted from such punishments. "Thankappan had sent a telegram on the same day that he extended his leave, informing the department of the same. He had also produced the medical certificate within the stipulated period of seven days," he said.
