KOLKATA, MARCH 10. The Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, H.A. Halim, today rejected a notice of breach of privilege against the Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, which was served by the Leader of the Opposition, Pankaj Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress. The notice referred to a remark reportedly made by Mr. Bhattacharjee earlier this week that the Trinamool Congress had covert links with the Peoples' War that had set up bases in some parts of the State. Such an allegation was a deliberate attempt to malign the party and amounted to contempt of privilege of members of the House representing the party, Mr. Banerjee said. The Speaker ruled that the Chief Minister's reported remarks did not amount to contempt of privilege of any member. "The Chief Minister's statement was made outside the House and had nothing to do with any member," he later told The Hindu.
