NEW DELHI, MARCH 10. An application was today filed in the Supreme Court seeking the recording of the Centre's undertaking in the court on February 27 that the tuition fee reduction from Rs. 1.50 lakhs to Rs. 30,000 a year in the six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) would not lead to interference with the autonomy of the institutions as well as shortage of funds. The application, filed by Sandeep Parekh, advocate, and two others, challenging the February 5 decision of the Government, said the court while disposing of the public interest litigation petition did not record the undertaking made on behalf of the Union Human Resources Development Ministry. The application, which is likely to be listed on Friday before a Bench headed by the Chief Justice, said that in the earlier order it was stated that the petition was being disposed of "in terms of the statement of the Additional Solicitor-General." The petitioners submitted that after the was order was passed, statements emanating from high functionaries of the Government seemed to suggest that they had not given any undertaking to the court and all that they had said was the direction to reduce the fees should not be construed as interference with the autonomy of the institutions.
