UNDP to support electricity project

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MARCH 11. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has agreed to support the Central Government's initiative to provide electricity from solar and other non-renewable sources of energy to about 60,000 families in remote areas, which are not in a position to be connected to the power grid.

Disclosing this, the UNDP representative and Coordinator in India, Maxine Olson, said her organisation also proposed to support the initiative of the Ministry of Steel to set up a technology information resource and facilitation centre to provide sustained and customised support for technology upgradation in re-rolling mills to help them become more energy efficient. She was delivering the keynote address at a seminar on `Technology Transfer and Diffusion,' organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Government of Canada and the India Energy Forum.
