PERAMBALUR, MARCH 11 . Perambalur district has remained second in the State in the last three months in liquor sales through Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation shops. The sale, which was to the tune of Rs.2.78 crores in December, rose sharply in January to reach Rs.4.55 crores. In February, the liquor sale was to the tune of Rs.4.41 crores, a release from the Collector, S. Natarajan, issued here yesterday said. Initially a total of 109 retail shops were set up in the district 29 in the town panchayat limits and 80 in the rural limits. Two shops in the urban limits and 15 shops in the rural limits were closed down, as they managed to fetch a monthly sales turnover of less than Rs.2,000 per day. At present 92 TASMAC shops were functioning in the district. The officials closely watched the functioning of these shops to check irregularities. So far five supervisors of TASMAC shops at Arumbavur, Sirukanpur, Siruvalur, Melappuliyur and Keezhapazhur and three salesmen at Krishnapuram and Vankudi were dismissed for not maintaining accounts properly and also for delayed remittance of sales turnover. Permission has been granted for running bars in eight more places two in the Jayamkondam panchayat limits and the rest in the rural areas of Siruvachur, Alanthurgate, Settikulam, Ammapalayam and Veppur from March 10 onwards. Already 14 bars were functioning in the district, he added.
