BJP leader elected to civic post with UDF support

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA, MARCH 11 . The BJP member, Jinachandran, was elected vice-chairman of the Thiruvalla municipality today with UDF support.

In the election held today, Mr. Jinachandran polled 19 votes while his LDF rival, K.K.Chellappan of the CPI(M), could poll only 12 votes.

The BJP has four seats in the 33-member municipal council while the UDF and the LDF have 15 and 14 seats respectively.

Raju Mundamattom of the Kerala Congress (Joseph) had become the municipal chairman with BJP support on June 30 and the BJP had got two municipal standing committee chairmanships with the LDF support, later.

However, in today's election, all the 15 UDF members, including six members belonging to the Congress, voted in favour of the BJP candidate while the two Janata Dal members of the LDF camp abstained from voting, ultimately restricting the vote tally of the LDF to 12, of its total strength of 14.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) area committee secretary, K.A. Joseph, alleged that the "new-found political understanding" between the UDF and the BJP in the Thiruvalla municipal council was an indication of the "unholy electoral understanding" between the two in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls in the Mavelikkara constituency.
