HYDERABAD, MARCH 11. The Hyderabad Telecom District of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has launched a new initiative whereby customers can get a basic landline phone with local call facility which for just Rs. 500 towards rental deposit. The previous rental deposit worked out to Rs. 3,000. The STD facility comes at Rs. 1,000 and international call provision at Rs. 1,500 coupled with a waiver of installation charges of Rs. 500. The offer is valid for all new subscribers exclusively in Hyderabad till March 31. The initiative includes setting up of customer care centres at eight locations in the twin cities -- CTO and Allauddin Building, Secunderabad, Neredmet, Padmaraonagar and Kushaiguda Cash Counters, Vikram Building, Vasant Vihar and Telephone Bhavan. At a press conference here on Wednesday, the Principal General Manager, HTD, C. Govardhan, said the special offer of waiver of rental for disconnected landlines was extended up to March 31. Customers just need to pay their user charges to have their phones ringing again. In addition, shifting charges too, had been waived and a customer could get his phone shifted from/to anywhere in India. He reiterated that local calls and those up to a distance of 50 km from BSNL land phones to any other land phone was being charged at a pulse rate of 180 seconds (three minutes) and not two minutes as feared by subscribers. Detailed billing, including `95' was being given free of cost too, he said. As regards Internet usage, a second phone meant exclusively for Internet with no dial-up call charges was being provided at a rental of Rs. 499 a month, with which subscribers could surf the net 24 hours. While there will be no installation charges for the second phone, the subscriber has to pay Internet usage charges to the concerned Internet Service Providers. For students, the BSNL is providing a dedicated phone line at a basic rental of Rs. 99 a month with a call rate of sixty paise per 3-minute pulse during peak hours and 10-minutes pulse during off-peak hours. This apart, subscribers could also use the `Surf Net Now, Pay Later' facility, Mr. Govardhan said.
