GOPALGANJ, MARCH 13. A local court today granted bail to Raghunath Jha, a Samata member of the dissolved Lok Sabha from Gopalganj, in a case of violation of model code of conduct in the 1999 general elections. The Judicial Magistrate, R.K. Tripathi, granted bail to Jha, who recently joined Laloo Prasad Yadav's RJD, on two bonds of Rs 5,000 each after he appeared before the court. Mr. Jha was alleged to have violated the model code during the last Lok Sabha polls in 1999 by unauthorisedly holding an election meeting and the court of judicial magistrate, Vinod Kumar, had on March 9 this year issued arrest warrant against him following his non-appearance despite issuance of several notices by the court. Mr. Jha's counsel, Prabhunath Singh, pleaded that his client had not received the notices served by the court and that the sections under which the case was filed against him were bailable. The court had also issued arrest warrants against Gopalganj district presidents of BJP and Samata Party Harinarain Singh and Prasiddha Narain Mishra respectively in the same case, but the two were released on bail some time ago after they appeared before the court. The Gopalganj district authorities had filed a case against Mr. Jha, Singh and Mishra for having held an election meeting in 1999 without securing the permission of competent authorities in violation of the model code of conduct.
