Stamp paper racket: CBI identifies 48 cases

By B.S. Ramesh

BANGALORE, MARCH 13. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has identified 48 of the 152 cases pertaining to the fake stamp paper racket registered in 11 States that it would like to investigate.

Highly-placed sources said on Saturday that the CBI had indicated that it would like to investigate 10 of the 16 cases registered against Abdul Kareem Telgi, alias, Kareem Lala, the prime accused in the racket, and his associates in Karnataka.

The sources said the CBI had proposed to take over investigation of 24 cases, including nine cases registered in Maharashtra, three in Andhra Pradesh, three in Uttar Pradesh, two each in Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and one each in Bihar, Delhi, Kerala, Gujarat, and West Bengal, respectively.

The sources said the agency had adopted four parameters for taking over the cases. The agency would investigate those cases where a large quantity of seizures had been made during investigations. However, this condition was likely to be waived in cases with inter-State ramifications.

The CBI would take over cases in which material used to print or fabricate fake stamp papers, postal stamps, films, blocks, ink, and perforating machines had been recovered, the sources said.
