KOZHIKODE, MARCH 13. A student of the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NITC), was offered a salary of Rs 5.5 lakhs per annum this year, which was higher than what was offered last year, as the campus recruitment reached a fag end. The offer was made by a U.S.-based multinational, Trilogy Limited, to a B.Tech student, whose batch is graduating in 2004. Last year, the highest salary offered was Rs. 4.25 lakhs. T.V. Gopalan, professor and head of Training, Placement and Linkage of the NITC, told The Hindu that this year, the recruitment showed an upward trend as far as the NITC students were concerned. The recruitment process will be completed by April-end. "Normally, the placement season ends by November. Companies trickle in even after that. This year we are expecting Microsoft to participate in the campus recruitment. They had informed us that they were interested in taking part. Microsoft would be coming to the campus for the first time. The offers made during the campus recruitment in NITC are the best this year in the State," Dr. Gopalan said. The campus recruitment for the students graduating in 2004 started from July 2003. Usually, it starts in August. So far, 60 companies have participated in the placement process. In all, 265 undergraduates (for B.Tech) and post-graduates (M.Tech and MCA) students were given placements during the campus recruitment. The combined strength of B.Tech, M.Tech and MCA students is 560. Last year, 190 students got placement through the campus recruitment. "The campus recruitment at the NITC is there almost round-the clock," said the NITC Director, S.S. Gokhale said. Dr. Gopalan pointed out that the current placements were in addition to the placements that the students, mostly post-graduates, get by their own efforts. "As the batch graduates in 2004, all of them will be placed somewhere.'' The lowest salary offered this year was Rs. 1.8 lakhs. The average salary offered was Rs. 3 lakhs. Last year, the lowest salary and average salary were almost the same as that of this year. Nearly 85 per cent of the companies that made a beeline to the NITC were IT companies, both software and hardware.
