Pilot plant to treat effluents planned in Tirupur

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPUR, MARCH 13. A pilot plant to treat the effluent generated by processing units here directly using "disc membrane technology" (reverse osmosis method) has been planned by the Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs).

Sources told The Hindu that the eight CETPs here treated about 4.25 crore litres of effluent a day. With the objective of trying to treat the effluent directly through the reverse osmosis method, the CETPs initiated certain measures.

They said that after the technology was identified it was tried by the plants in association with a private company. Effluent samples generated from the processing units here had been passed through different kinds of "disc membrane" and the one suitable for the effluent generated from these units was selected. It was found that the processing units could reuse about 90 per cent of the effluent passed through the membrane.

Hence, it has now been proposed to go in for a pilot plant with a capacity to treat about 1,000 litres of effluent an hour in one of the plants. Based on its success, all the plants in the town could implement this method, the sources said.

Further, to treat the "rejected" material (from the effluent passed through this membrane), one of the plants was trying to use the "solar evaporator" method which would also be experimented shortly.

By implementing the two methods, a substantial portion of treated effluent could be reused and the sludge generated would be minimised to a great extent. This would benefit the processing units, they said.
