Police rescue kidnapped customs official

KANCHEEPURAM,
MARCH 13.
The police rescued a customs official within two hours of his abduction by a gang near Sadras in Kancheepuram district last night. All five persons of the gang have been arrested. Police sources said Basim Ahmed (50), Additional
Commissioner of Customs, Pondicherry, who was coming to Chennai in a car, was waylaid at Vayalur.
The gang abducted him after attacking him and his driver, Ramachandran, and fled in its car. Ramachandran, who escaped, informed the Kalpakkam police who, in turn, alerted the Mahabalipuram checkpost.
The checkpost police stopped the kidnapper's vehicle and rescued Mr. Ahmed. The cause of abduction is under investigation.
