Focus on solving problems plaguing the society, NSS units told

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI, MARCH 13. The activities of the National Service Scheme units in universities and colleges should focus on solving the problems confronting the society and addressing its future needs, the Collector, K. Manivasan, said.

Delivering the inaugural address at a two-day national seminar on `recent trends in NSS projects and programmes,' organised by the NSS units of the Bharathidasan University and the Jamal Mohamed College here today, Dr. Manivasan commended the role played by the NSS volunteers in the successful implementation of various government programmes such as the setting up of rainwater harvesting structures, total sanitation campaign etc.

Managements of some of the colleges allocated special funds for conducting camps for popularising these schemes and this only showed the interest evinced by them in the cause of the community.

The Collector said the Government was willing to reduce the financial burden of the colleges and the district administration had special funds, which could be allotted for the NSS camps being conducted in rural areas.

He urged the NSS units to take the advantage of the same.

Dr. Manivasan said, of late, representatives of the local bodies were evincing keen interest in the NSS activities aimed at improving the living conditions in rural areas.

The Convener of the Vice-Chancellor Committee, K. Meena, said the activities of the NSS units of the colleges attached to the Bharathidasan University had won accolades from various quarters. The university accorded top priority for the NSS concept, owing to which many new units came up in the current academic year.

Dr. Meena said the `IT on Wheels' programme of the district administration proved a big hit in the rural areas, thanks to the involvement of the NSS volunteers. The students actively participated in the campaign and created an awareness among the rural masses of the importance of computers and in popularising the IT concept.

Skill-oriented programmes, conducted by the NSS volunteers during the camps, had come handy for the women self-help groups in launching their economic activities. The NSS volunteers of the university were also involved in the socio-economic survey on improving the literacy rate, Dr. Meena added.

Referring to the action plan of the NSS of the university for the ensuing academic year, Dr. Meena said the participation of the students in government-sponsored schemes for promoting health and hygiene had also been included in it.

The Mayor, Sarubala R. Tondaiman, the Syndicate member, S. Ramalingam, the Registrar in-charge, V. Ayothi, the Deputy Programme Advisor, NSS Regional Centre, Chennai, A. Paul, the State Liaison Officer, Tamil Nadu NSS Cell, Karu Nagarajan, and others spoke.
