CHENNAI, MARCH 13. The Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, today blessed 20 Iraqi children who underwent cardiac surgery at the International Centre for Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Diseases here. Giving them `prasadams,' the Sankaracharya said heart diseases, like cancer, did not betray signals before appearing. People should lead a life free from tension, anger and ego to keep their hearts in good shape. Tamil Nadu, the Sankaracharya said, was making major strides in cardiac surgery. All modern equipment required for surgery were there, especially at the International Centre for Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Diseases. For the success of surgery, the skill of the doctor along with a healing touch was necessary, the Acharya said pointing to the centre's director, K.M. Cherian. The people of Iraq came here in the belief that their problems would be solved and they were not disappointed, he said. The Sankaracharya called for contribution from corporate houses towards such philanthropic deeds. R. Sambasiva Rao, Additional Director-General of Health Services, sanctioned Rs. 5 lakhs to the centre for post-operative medication of the Iraqi children. He said the hospital had actually asked for Rs. 1.5 lakhs from the Union Government. Seventeen of the children belonged to Baghdad, while the others were from Fallujah, Babylon and Diyala. The children were among the most in need of surgery identified by Brothers Together of Shevet Achim, a United States-based organisation working with the children. Iraq had the knowledge and expertise, but its equipment were destroyed in the war, said Linda McFadden, a registered nurse volunteering for Brothers Together.
