COIMBATORE, MARCH 13. The Textiles Committee has taken efforts to help select weavers of Chennimalai and Bhavani produce value-added products through its cluster development programme. Committee sources said that last year an exposure visit was organised for the weavers of Chennimalai-Bhavani areas to Panipet. Following this, a 10-day training programme was held at Erode in tufted-carpet making for 25 weavers of Chennimalai. A weaver in Chennimalai, who had attended the training programme, was now producing sample carpets. This year, four weavers from Chennimalai were being imparted intensive training in tufted-carpet making for about a month in Panipet itself. Sources pointed out that most of the Chennimalai-Bhavani weavers were involved in the production of home textiles and these programmes were aimed at helping them produce value-added products. Following the training programmes, measures would also be taken to arrange financial assistance for the weavers. Sources said that in a move to help them directly export the products, the Committee planned activities to improve the production and marketing of their products through cluster approach. It was proposed to send some weavers to Kozhikode shortly for training in tapestry weaving (wall hanging).
