Ex gratia announced for victims' kin

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH. 13. The Minister for Commercial Taxes, K. Vijayarama Rao, on Saturday announced an ex gratia of Rs. 50,000 each to the next of kin of the two women who were killed on Friday after the Secunderabad-bound MMTS train hit them near Allapur.

The victims - Nasreena Begum (23) and her elder sister, Nazeema Begum (28) were mowed down by the train and one-year-old Shakir, Nasreena's son, seriously injured while they were crossing the railway track. The mishap led to demonstration by the locals.

In a press release, Mr. Vijayarama Rao said that that the ex gratia would be given to them under the `Apathbhandu' scheme.

Earlier, he held a meeting with South Central Railway General Manager, T. Stanley Babu and had discussions on how to prevent such mishaps in the future. The Minister said that an over bridge would be constructed between Allapur and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar for the safety of the local residents.

Mr. Vijayarama Rao, however, asked Mr. Stanley Babu to conduct a technical survey on whether an overbridge or an under-bridge should be constructed at the site. The Minister told Mr. Stanley Babu that the State Government was ready to release its share of funds for the construction of the bridge.

In a separate press release, the SCR authorities, while regretting the incident, stated that in view of the increased frequency of rail services, it has been undertaking public awareness campaigns through different media on safety measures while crossing the tracks. They appealed to the public to exercise caution while crossing the tracks.

The SCR authorities said that they would contemplate any necessary step in order to optimise safety of the public by deliberating on the same with the local revenue authorities.
