This Day That Age
His Holiness Sri Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam is personally giving sanyasa (holy orders) and upadesam to Sri M. Subramaniam, a 19-year-old Vadama Smartha boy, as his first disciple and successor on March 22 in Little Kancheepuram. Holy orders and upadesam are not given personally by the Jagadguru to anyone other than the successor to the gadi. The lad hails from Mannargudi of a very orthodox family and is the eldest son of Mr. P. Mahadeva Aiyar, now working in the Loco Department, Southern Railway, Tiruchirapalli. Sri Subramaniam had his full adyayanam in Rig Veda and has since studied the Upanishads and the shastras in the Tirunakkaral Patasala and later under the reputed Pandit Mayavaram Krishna Sastrigal at Tiruvidaimarudur. Ceremonies and rituals pertinent to the initiation into holy orders have commenced in Little Kancheepuram from March 14 where His Holiness is staying and will go on till March 22 when the boy will enter the sanyasasramam.
