PONDICHERRY, MARCH 14. The Chennai unit of the Directorate of Field Publicity conducted a week-long intensive campaign on AIDS awareness in Pondicherry. The purpose of the campaign, which covered villages in the Ariankuppam and Nettapakkam blocks, was to bring to focus the various aspects of HIV and AIDS. Discussions and rallies were held to create awareness of AIDS prevention. The co-sponsors of the programme were the Pondicherry AIDS Control Society, the Community Seva Centre, and the Valarkalvi Iyakkam. Competitions among villagers formed part of the campaign. The Station Director of Pondicherry AIR, K. P. Srinivasan, the Project Director of the AIDS Control Society, G. L. V. Chalapathy Rao, and the Deputy Director of the Continuing Education Programme, M. Swaminathan, doctors and local opinion leaders spoke on the preventive aspects. A communication from the Field Publicity Officer, Chennai, said around 2,000 villagers were covered.
