BIJAPUR, MARCH 14. S.K. Kanta, Janata Dal (S) leader, said here on Saturday that he was not contesting the Assembly elections for want of resources. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Kanta, who was here as party observer for the selection of candidates, said only resourceful leaders could afford to contest present-day elections. Money was needed in lakhs, and he was not in a position to spend that much. Asked if he would contest should the Janata Dal (S) come forward to bear the expenses, Mr. Kanta said he did not think the party, which did not have an election fund, would do so. At one point of time, Mr. Kanta said he did not see many "positive movements" for the Janata Dal (S) in the coming the elections. Asked if he accepted the party's defeat even before the elections, he, however, said it was in a better position than the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which were on the decline. To a query, he said the Janata Dal (S) had been strengthened in Gulbarga district where it would lock horns with the Congress. Alluding to the BJP, he said a party, which had been claiming that it would capture power in the State, was, in fact, searching for candidates and trying to lure leaders from the Janata Parivar. On the selection of Janata Dal (S) candidates in the district, he said the party was collecting applications and a list would be announced soon after their scrutiny. B.G. Patil Halasangi, president of district unit of the party, and the former MLA, K. Sharanappa, were present.
