CUDDAPAH, MARCH 14. The Congress would ensure social justice and strive for the welfare of the downtrodden and weaker sections, women and youth, asserted the former Congress Legislature Party leader, Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, on Sunday. Dr. Reddy toured Urutur, Venkatapuram, Basireddipalle, Veldurthy, Sarvarajupeta, Adavi Cherlopalle, Sangalapalle, Payasampalle, Animela and Veerapunayunipalle villages in Veerapunayunipalle mandal in Kamalapuram constituency, represented in the dissolved Assembly by M.V. Mysoora Reddy, who quit the Congress and joined the TDP. During his second-day campaign in the segment, Congress functionaries offered a `raktha thilakam' to Dr. Reddy after receiving him. Dr. Reddy accused the State Government of adopting `step-motherly' attitude towards farmers and being indifferent to a spate of suicide due to lack of irrigation facilities and remunerative prices. The TDP Government's policies left people in a quandary and the plight of farmers became miserable, he alleged. Calling upon party cadre to enlighten people and farmers about the Government's dubious policies, he reiterated the promise of free power supply to agriculturists and single-bulb households, loan at nominal interest to farmers and DWCRA members. He also promised expeditious completion of irrigation projects such as Galeru Nagari and Gandikota reservoir that would augment irrigation facilities in the constituency. No irrigation project was completed during the TDP rule and on the other hand, Cuddapah Cooperative Sugars Ltd and Allwyn factory were closed down rendering workers jobless, the Congress leader observed. He charged the TDP Government with promoting `opportunistic' politics for gaining political mileage. Alleging that TDP leaders were planning to rig the polls in the segment, he called upon party functionaries to foil their attempts. The constituency in-charge, Putha Narasimha Reddy, also spoke.
