Chennai & Namakkal triumph

SIVAKASI, MARCH 14. While Chennai won the overall championship in the men's individual and team events, with 15 points and 10 points respectively, Namakkal won the overall championship in women's section in the individual and team events with 22 and 14 points respectively in the Tamil Nadu State Senior fencing championship conducted jointly by the Virudhunagar District Fencing Association and Sri Kaliswari College at the College Campus here on Sunday.

G. Gokila of Namakkal, a B.Com student of Selvam College of Arts and Science, Namakkal cornered glory by winning four golds. She won golds in the women's Foil and Sabre individual events and helped to win Namakkal golds in Foil and Sabre team events.

S. Amirtharaj of Kanyakumari District won the gold in the men's Epee individual event after fighting hard with Santhosh Kumar of Chennai. Both of them finished with 10 points at the end of the fight and in the spin of the coin, Amirtharaj called right and yet he had to fight for another 30 seconds with his opponent. Since no one could take a point in that 30 seconds Amirtharaj was declared winner.

Final placings: Individual events: Men: 1. Chennai 15 pts, 2. Namakkal 11, 3. Kanyakumari 8.

Team events: 1.Chennai 10, 2. Madurai 6 ; 3. Tuticorin 5.

Women: Individual events: 1. Namakkal 22, 2. Tirunelveli 10 , 3. Tiruchi 7.

Team events: 1. Namakkal 14, 2. Chennai 12 , 3. Tiruchi 10.

Mr. A.P.Selvarajan, Secretary, Sri Kaliswari College, presided and Mr. K.V.Kanniappan, District Revenue Officer, Virudhunagar District gave away the prizes.

Dr. P.Chelladurai, Secretary, VDFA, welcomed the gathering. Prof .S. Rajasekaran, Joint Secretary proposed a vote of thanks.

Men: Individual events: Foil (final): S. Prabukumar (Namakkal) bt V. Karunamurthy (Chn) 10-9. Semi-finals: S. Prabukumar bt Dinesh Devaraj (KK) 10-8; S.Prabukumar bt P.Parthiban (Chn) 10-9.

Epee: (final): S. Amirtharaj (KK) bt Santhoshkuamr (Chn) 10-10-won on toss. Semifinals: S.Amirtharaj bt Sasikumar (Mdu) 5-2; Santhoshkumar bt Balamurugan (Namakkal) 5-3.

Sabre (final): M. Santhoshkumar (Chn) bt Elamparuthi (Trichy) 10-8. Semifinals: M. Santhoshkumar bt G.N. Rajesh (Vellore) 10-6; M. Santhoshkumar bt Puliyachipan (Namakkal) 10-6.

Men: Team events: Epee: (final): Chennai (D.V.Karunamurthy, K.Sathyanarayanan, M.Santhoshkumar, J.Stephen) bt Vellore (Balasubramani, Venkatesan, L.Yuvaraj, P.Rudhran) 15-12.

Foil: (final): Tiruchi (D.Mehbook Khan, E. Elamparuthi, S. Sundaramurthy, A.P. Amarnath) bt Namakkal (Sivashanmugam, S. Prabakaran, V. Kalamega Kannan, P.Dinesh Karthick) 15-11.

Sabre: (final): Chennai (K.Maninathan, P.Parthiban, Stephen, M.Santhoshkumar) bt Salem (S.R.Saravanan, N.Abuthahir, S.Harishkumar, Balakrishnan) 15-12.

Women: Individual events: Foil: (final): G. Gokila (Namakkal) bt N. Sellammal (Namakkal) 10-8. Semi-finals: G. Gokila bt Punitha Sobi (KK) 5-4; N. Sellammal bt Johncylin 5-3.

Sabre: (final): G. Gokila bt P.Rajeswari (Tirunelveli) 10-6.

Semifinals: G.Gokila bt M.Daisy Rani (Tiruchi) 5-4; P.Rajeswari bt M.Parvathi (TVL) 5-3.

Epee: (final): V.Leelavathi (Namakkal) bt P.Janet Mari Patia (Trichy) 10-8.
