East Bengal, Dempo split points

By Our Special Correspondent

KOLKATA, MARCH 14. It was status quo at the top as the leader East Bengal and second-placed Dempo Sports Club drew their 15th round NFL match goalless at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Sunday. The draw sees East Bengal three points clear of Dempo, which ended with 28 from 15 matches.

Unable to put up its best side for the best match of the second phase of the league, East Bengal's approach was defensive, especially in the second half where the home side refused to take any risk. After an initial burst of attack, East Bengal found the going tough and did well to keep the visiting team from scoring.

East Bengal pressed hard between the 22nd and 29th minute only to miss three chances. First Alvito D'Cunha's shot sailed over the bar and then Bhaichung Bhutia's header was saved by goalie Avijit Mondal, after overlapping right-back Sur Kumar Singh's measured centre found the striker. This was followed by another Singh's centre that had Mike Okoro shooting at the goal and Mondal tipping the ball over.

After Sunday Seah blazed over the East Bengal bar in the 39th minute, off a Majeko Bolaji free-kick from the left of the penalty box, East Bengal came up with another threatening chance but failed. Defender Mahesh Gawli, in one of the overlaps, found Okoro's pass inside the box and tried to toe the ball in but was thwarted by Mondal. Bhutia too tried to push in the rebound but defender Raju Singh cleared the ball. The second half was rather subdued with East Bengal not venturing out in full force. Dempo saw the ball more but failed to translate the numerical superiority into goals.

In the injury time before close, East Bengal put almost 10 men in search of the match-clincher to avenge the 2-3 first leg defeat but some good goalkeeping and luck denied the local side the success.
