TUMKUR, MARCH 14. The drinking water crisis has worsened at Sira and Gubbi, and many villages in Tumkur district. Many private parties are supplying water by tankers in parts of Sira with the town municipality unable to meet the demand. They charge between Rs. 100 and Rs. 150 a tanker. At Gubbi, the town panchayat is supplying water to the affected areas by tankers. A Rs. 3.50-crore drinking water project was to be completed by June 2003, but work on the project is still going on at the Heruru tank. Of the 1,812 borewells drilled in Gubbi taluk, 363 have dried up. The problem is acute at Kittadakuppe, Thorehalli, Vadalur, and R.S. Palya in Herur hobli. Seeking water supply, women of these villages prevented the officials concerned from holding gram sabhas recently. Between July and October last, when water was released into the Tumkur Hemavathy Canal, the Government did not fill the tanks in Gubbi taluk.
