Wastage of organs

Sir, — This has reference to the report `Labourer's kin agree to cadaver harvest' in The Hindu of March 10 (Page 3). It is sad to note that there were no `takers for heart and lungs', particularly when there are medical institutions in the city, with facilities and expertise as well as waiting list for heart and lung transplantation. There are many cadaveric kidney transplantations being performed in the city and at the same time the hearts and lungs are being wasted because no effort is made to inform the hospitals where patients are waiting for these invaluable organs. Wastage of these organs is unacceptable and the Government should take steps to prevent this, by making this notification of availability of organs to all hospitals, mandatory.

Callousness

Sir,— A money order for Rs.101 sent to my mother by her brother from Bangalore in November last was not received by her. On enquiry with the sender, it was found that the acknowledgement for delivery of the money order bore the ICF post office seal. It was found out that the signature of my mother had been forged. When I took up the matter with the ICF post office I was told to lodge a complaint.

Accordingly I had lodged a complaint on December 27, 2003 at the ICF post office and on December 30, 2003 at the office of the Chief Post Master General, Anna Salai. The authorities assured me that they would reply within 10 days. But only after two months they had enquired about the incident with my mother. They have not yet paid the money due to my mother.

Shift transformer

Sir, — There is a transformer, positioned dangerously at the junction of Arcot Road and Vembuli Amman Koil Street at Virugambakkam. Several huge apartments have come up on this street and have made this narrow junction difficult to negotiate.

I request the authorities concerned to shift this transformer for the sake of the pedestrians and people driving vehicles in this area.

Moreover, a signal erected at this junction will ensure smooth flow of traffic.

Laborious affair

Sir, — I had applied for single phase temporary EB connection under commercial supply system in July 2002 for my house construction at Ramana Nagar, Madambakkam.

The construction was over in November 2002. I requested the authorities to disconnect the system and applied for a 3-phase connection. The disconnection was done on January 21, 2003.

Since then I have written many letters, requesting refund of deposit.

Ration card: Will

Govt. act fast?

Sir, — Although the ration card is insisted upon everywhere as a proof of identification, the Government seems not serious about issuing the same to the people who are in need.

Having lost my card I have applied for a new one. Though the inspection was over more than six months ago, I am yet to get a new one. I am told that printing of new cards has not been done for quite sometime.

Since the election is round the corner and every voter is expected to carry a document as a proof for identity, will the Government take immediate steps to print new ration cards for fresh applicants?

Left in the lurch

Sir, — The residents of the First Link Street, Raghava Reddy Colony, Ashok Nagar are facing acute shortage of water. There are about thirty families in this street. Borewells in most of the houses have become dry.

Metrowater has installed sintex tanks in other streets of our area and supplies water by tankers.

But our First Link Street that lies right behind the blue tank filling point of Metrowater on the 11th Avenue, Ashok Nagar continues to be ignored.

Mindless extraction

Sir, — The residents of Pallavaram, especially Pallava Gardens, Thiruthani and Thiruchendur Nagars suffer much because of the continuous exploitation of groundwater by the private water traders. Though the Groundwater Act does not permit over-extraction of groundwater, there is no official machinery to check the illegal tapping of water.

Who is blameless?

Sir, — Now the DMK, PMK, CPI(M) are all perturbed that the election manifesto of the AIADMK is defamatory, with indecent attacks against Sonia Gandhi. According to them if this unrestrained attack on persons is allowed then it will embolden some to use the word `unpatriotic' in their election campaign against any individual.

The Congress for the last Lok Sabha elections brought that word `gadder' in usage against its opponents.

In fact Mrs. Sonia Gandhi gave the lead at the AICC meet held in Bangalore and the rest picked it up.

Now these parties are questioning the alliance of the AIADMK with the BJP and ask how Jayalalithaa who stated in the Assembly that she wanted a non-Congress, non-BJP candidate as the PM could now support Mr. Vajpayee.

The election manifesto of the AIADMK has rightly focussed on the main issue, namely, the foreign origin of Ms. Sonia Gandhi. Vasan is wrong in comparing Ms. Sonia Gandhi to Annie Besant and Sister Nivedita and others because these individuals did not aspire for power.

Bus halt sought

Sir, — The 5G express is the only straight bus from Velachery to P.T.C. quarters. It does not halt at the Jain College bus stop. Many students from Velachery and surrounding areas suffer a lot during peak hours. There are three colleges near the stop, namely M.N.M. Jain Engineering College, D.B. Jain College and C.L. Baid Mehta College of Pharmacy.

It will be very helpful if the 5G express buses halt at the Jain College bus stop. There is no ordinary and limited stop buses in 5G service.

Remove debris

Sir, — Demolition and construction have been going on at and around Singaperumal Koil railway station for sometime. The debris, dug up earth and other waste that had accumulated during the lengthening of the platform for broad-gauge have been lying uncleared on the eastern side.

This emboldens unruly elements to dump cow dung and other waste here. It gives room for poisonous insects and reptiles to live and pose a threat to commuters and passersby.

C. Parthasarathy,

Singaperumal Koil
