CHENNAI, MARCH 14. Residents of Kattabomman Nagar in Pallavaram organised a human chain yesterday near the Chromepet Government Hospital protesting non-supply of anti-rabies vaccine to the hospital. Carrying placards, they demanded renewal of the vaccine stock at the hospital because at least 100 cases of dog bites come to the hospital everyday from areas within 20 km radius of the hospital. They are mostly sent off as the hospital does not have enough stock to meet the demand. This has been the situation for the past six months, they said. The tissue-based vaccine was expensive and the treatment process was beyond the reach of the poor. The residents were joined by representatives of other residents' associations in the Pallavaram Municipality area. They said doctors promised that dog-bite victims would henceforth be admitted in the hospital and kept under observation for a day. If the victim showed any uneasy signs, he or she would be given the complete course of treatment five injections. The others would be given three injections. The hospital would, thus, be saving on the vaccines, they said.
