Fishermen protest use of banned nets
By Our Staff Reporter
RAMANATHAPURAM,
MARCH 15.
Around 500 fishermen including 200 women attempted to stage a road roko at Pamban today as officials "failed" to take action against those fishermen who used banned nets.
According to sources, the Fisheries department at Pamban issued fishing tokens to 32 fishermen to venture into the sea on Sunday.
The fishermen allegedly used banned nets. When traditional fishermen came to know about this, they staged a road roko yesterday to protest against issuing of tokens to them.
However, revenue and police officials pacified them. The fishermen withdrew the agitation after the officials assured them that steps would be taken to seize their boats as well as the nets.
But when the officials did not take any action, the fishermen tried to stage a road roko today.
However, they withdrew their agitation after the Collector, S. Vijaya Kumar, assured them that criminal action would be taken against those fishermen who used banned nets.
