Trade unions form panel to protect Swadeshi mill

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, MARCH 15 Trade unions have formed a joint committee to protect the Swadeshi Cotton Mills and to prevent the National Textiles Corporation (NTC), running the mill, from closing the unit.

V.S. Abishegam, AITUC general secretary and committee convener, said today that instead of taking steps to ensure that the mill scaled new heights, there were ``attempts by the NTC to close the mill''.

Mr. Abishegam alleged that the NTC was projecting the mill in wrong light to create an impression that it was not a profitable one.

Representatives of trade unions attached to the committee would stage a demonstration near the Assembly here on March 18 to urge the Congress Government to take steps to ensure that the NTC transferred the mill, with all its assets, to the Pondicherry Government, so that it could run the mill without threat of closure.

The trade unions would organise a State-level general strike on April 21 to urge the Administration to ensure continued working of the mill.
