HYDERABAD, MARCH 15. A two-week training course in geomatics engineering (remote sensing and GIS) in environmental management commenced at the Centre for Environment, Institute of Science and Technology, of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University here on Monday. The course, which will be conducted by senior scientists and faculty members from organisations including the National Remote Sensing Agency, Survey of India and the Forest Department, among others, will have discussions on the prospects of introducing the subject of geomatics engineering in the civil engineering departments of polytechnic and engineering colleges. Speaking on the occasion, course coordinator M. Anji Reddy of the Centre of Environment said that though there was tremendous scope for interaction between remote sensing and environmental management, there was not much of the same happening. A fruitful collaboration between the two fields would go a long way in helping management of natural resources in the country and preparation of human resources for the purpose as well. The training course was being conducted with the objective of reviewing the work that has already been initiated and currently is in progress apart from identifying potential areas for future research studies, Mr. Reddy said. The nearly 50 participants would be given an overview on geomatics technologies, remote sensing physics and techniques, fundamentals of GIS and geomatics applications in environment among other topics, he said.
