Examinations on Good Friday rescheduled
By Our Special Correspondent
GANDHINAGAR,
MARCH 15.
The Gujarat Government has cancelled school examinations scheduled to be held on April 9, Good Friday, and has asked that they be held on April 11, despite it being a Sunday.
The decision to re-schedule the examinations was taken on the intervention of the National Commission for the Minorities which was moved by the All India Christian Council.
The Government has not so far taken a decision on declaring Good Friday a public holiday as demanded by the AICC. The AICC joint secretary, Samson Christian, said the Council would move the High Court for necessary direction. The Government has declared Good Friday only as a restricted holiday.
The school examinations originally scheduled to be started from April 12 had to be advanced to April 3 because of the Lok Sabha elections in the State on April 20. All school examinations had been directed to be completed by April 12 for which Good Friday was also included in the examinations schedule.
Mr. Christian said he had been informed about the re-scheduling of the examinations by a circular issued by the Education Department.
He condemned the State Government's "interference'' in the religious affairs of the minority Christians and pointed out that in the last two years the AICC had to move the High Court twice to get the school examinations rescheduled.
