Non-bailable warrant against accused in wealth case

By K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI, MARCH 15. A special court here today issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against an accused in a ``disproportionate wealth case'' against the former Agriculture Minister, Ku.Pa. Krishnan, for his failure to turn up in the court.

Adjourning the case to March 19, the court said the warrant should be executed by then.

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) filed a charge sheet against the former AIADMK Minister for allegedly possessing wealth to the tune of Rs.3.72 crores which, the police said, was ``disproportionate to known sources of his income.''

The charge sheet was taken on file and the case posted for furnishing copies to the accused. When the case was taken up today, eight accused, including the former Minister, were present. Another accused, Chittibabu, was not present. His wife had made an endorsement on the reverse of the summons copy, stating her husband had gone to the northern States and that his whereabouts were not known. Hence the judge, T. Mathivanan, ordered issue of the non-bailable warrant.

He said the copies of the charge sheet were ready but as one of the accused was absent, the court could not furnish them.

Meanwhile, the court has posted for March 18 the ``wealth case'' against the former AIADMK MLA, Theni V. Panneerselvam. It dismissed as not maintainable a petition by the second accused, P. Janakiammal, seeking Tamil copies of portions of the charge sheet which were in English. She submitted that she was an illiterate. Several pages were in English and she could not understand them.

Opposing the petition, the DVAC submitted that the application had been made only to protract the proceedings. Most documents were only in Tamil. For an illiterate, language did not matter as counsel would represent her in court.

The charge against the former legislator was that he accumulated wealth to the tune of Rs.21.36 lakhs which was ``disproportionate to known sources of his income''.

Besides Mr. Panneerselvam and Ms. Janakiammal, one Dhanabaghyam has been cited as accused.
