By T.S. Shankar and N. Ravi Kumar CHENNAI, MARCH 15. Mobile-to-mobile local calls throughout the State! That's a call Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited would not like to miss. The telecom giant has decided to treat the telecom circles of Tamil Nadu and Chennai Telephones as a single area of operation for fixing the tariff. If a BSNL subscriber of Tamil Nadu Telecom makes a call to a mobile phone in Chennai (treated as a separate short distance charging area), including those offered by private telecom service providers, it would be treated as a local call. The Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle has 3.50 lakh mobile subscribers. In turn, calls from mobile users of Chennai Telephones to any mobile in the State will be charged at local rates. No roaming charges will be applicable to Tamil Nadu Telecom cellular subscribers when they receive a call in Chennai. The same principle will apply when a Chennai Telephones mobile user roams in the State circle limits. "The facility will come into effect as soon as the required changes are made to the billing software," a senior BSNL official told The Hindu here today. Describing it as a value-addition to BSNL cellular users, officials of Chennai Telephones and the Tamil Nadu Telecom circle are confident that the measure will boost the popularity of the service. Chennai Telephones has close to 1.20 lakh mobile subscribers in the State. Calls from Tamil Nadu Telecom and Chennai Telephones mobile users to BSNL landlines anywhere in the State will also be charged local rate. A senior Chennai Telephones official said a public announcement on the changes would be made in a few days.
