DMK's doubts born of fear of defeat: BJP

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MARCH 15. Fear of defeat has gripped the Democratic Progressive alliance and this is evident from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief, M. Karunanidhi's statements seeking to "mislead" voters on the National Democratic Alliance's candidate for Prime Minister, C.P. Radhakrishnan, State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said here today.

Referring to his expressing doubts whether the NDA would retain Atal Bihari Vajpayee as Prime Minister, Mr. Radhakrishnan wondered why the DMK chief did not have such reservations when his party was in the NDA.

The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-BJP combine would win all seats in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. As there was no success for the rival camp in projecting the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, as the candidate for Prime Minister, it resorted to misleading the people, he alleged.

On the Shiv Sena's decision to contest 23 seats in the State and field a candidate against him in Coimbatore, Mr. Radhakrishnan said: "In a democracy, parties are free to contest any number of seats when they are not in any alliance". He denied there was any rift in the party over the nomination of the former Pattali Makkal Katchi MP, P.T. Elangovan, in Dharmapuri.
