KARUR, MARCH 15 . In a bid to create an awareness among the electorate of voting through the electronic voting machine (EVM), the Karur Collector, P. Annamalai, utilised the grievances day held at the Collectorate here today to sensitise those, who had come to present petitions to him. Mr. Annamalai drove home the point that the EVMs were foolproof and could not be tampered with. Since the whole exercise had built-in checks and balances at several levels, the opportunity to abuse the machines was also negligible, he told the gathering. As the coming Lok Sabha elections would be conducted solely through EVMs, it was imperative that the electorate understood the method of casting their vote using the EVM. Mr. Annamalai demonstrated how simple it was, even for the unlettered, to use the EVMs. The district administration would try to popularise the use of the machines among all sections of the society. Apart from the voters, officials, polling personnel, political parties were being sensitised to the method of voting through the EVM, Mr. Annamalai said. He also enlightened the public on the do's and dont's in the polling booth. At the grievances day meeting, the Collector received a total of 351 petitions from the public who sought bank loan, free house site pattas, employment opportunities and drinking water facilities among other things. He directed the officials concerned to look into the petitions and take suitable actions on them expeditiously. A host of officials from various departments also participated in the meeting.
