Plea for action against police officer

By Our Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD, MARCH 15. The Kerala Union of Working Journalists and the Kerala Journalists' Union have urged the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, and the Director General of Police, P.K. Hormese Tharakan, to take action against a sub-inspector, Kabeer Rawthar, who allegedly tried to manhandle mediapersons who had gathered to attend a press conference called by the Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, at the Collectorate Conference Hall here today.

The sub-inspector reportedly tried to push out some senior scribes who were waiting at the entrance of the hall and abused the senior journalists, S. Jagadeesh Babu (`Kerala Kaumudi'), U.K. Babu (Asianet Cable Vision) and Das Mattumantha (Kairali TV).

Though the Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, assured the mediapersons that action would be taken against the police official, the police authorities have reportedly refused to take any action. They said that they were unable to do so "because of the declaration of election".

The Minister entrusted the District Collector, Sanjeev Kaushik, to take up the matter with the Superintendent of Police, Abdul Khader. The Collector said that though the Minister had told Mr. Khader to take stern action against the sub-inspector, he had agreed to issue a mere warning to the police official concerned. According to the journalists' unions, the incident is a sequel to some recent press reports against the Dy.SP., M.D. Baby, who had allegedly prevented an Advocate Commission appointed by the court to examine a vehicle seized by the Town South Police. The Bar Association has filed a contempt of court case against the Dy. S.P and the Town South Police. The Advocate General has started an inquiry into the incident and directed the Superintendent of Police and other officials involved in the incident to appear before him on March 25.
