Congress to field M.S. Gill for Rajya Sabha

NEW DELHI, MARCH 15. The Congress party today decided to field the former Chief Election Commissioner, Manohar Singh Gill, to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab against the three vacancies arising there next month.

The senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, is understood have been cleared from Kerala while the party spokesperson, Anand Sharma, has been fielded for the lone vacancy in Himachal Pradesh.

Though tomorrow is the last date for filing of nominations for the March 26 election, the party made no official announcement. Party sources said Mr. Gill was asked to file his papers. The party is expected to wrest three of the five seats that would fall vacant in the Council of State on April 2. The Pradesh Congress Chief, H.S. Hanspal, was among those tipped to be nominated.
