Will Doordarshan be able to telecast Tuesday's India-Pakistan cricket match in Rawalpindi? This is a question even Prasar Bharati was unable to answer for sure late tonight and all that officials said was that the Supreme Court had ordered Ten Sports which has exclusive rights to the series to give signals of tomorrow's One-Day International fixture to Doordarshan also.
However, with Ten Sports maintaining that its parent company Taj TV Pvt. Ltd., Dubai may well not give the signals to its Indian entity for fear of affecting the exclusivity of its satellite channel network across borders, doubts are being expressed in some quarters that television viewers in the country may be unable to see the match.
Though Ten Sports officials remained tight-lipped, the buzz is that by "arm-twisting'' the satellite channel into sharing its exclusive rights with Doordarshan on the ground of national interest, Prasar Bharati may have ensured that the ``people of India do not get to see the match tomorrow even if they have cable television.''
Word is that in view of such a possibility, senior government functionaries had stepped in to mediate between the two sides and ensure that the match is telecast tomorrow. But, as of late tonight, the question mark persisted and probably will till the designated hour.
