BANGALORE, MARCH 15. The Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, M.S. Thimmappa, has said all degree colleges affiliated to the university will switch over to the semester system from the next academic year. The University Academic Council will meet next month to approve introduction of the semester system. The varsity decided to introduce the semester system to reduce burden on students and improve the quality of B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com. degree courses. "The semester system will keep both students and teachers active throughout the academic year," Prof. Thimmappa, the 18th Vice-Chancellor of the university, told The Hindu on completion of two years in office today. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has been asking the university to switchover to the semester system for the past two years. Syllabus of all 42 core subjects have been revised and the respective Boards of Studies have approved it. A sum of Rs. 15 lakh has been set aside to hold a series of workshops and training sessions for undergraduate teachers to familiarise themselves with the semester system. The university recently convened a meeting of college principals to discuss introduction of semester system and many of them supported the decision. About 300 principals attended it. Mr. Thimmappa said the students also welcomed the decision. Asked about the government decision to set up a new university in Tumkur, he said about 100 colleges situated in Tumkur, Kolar, and Bangalore Rural districts would be under its jurisdiction.
