BANGALORE, MARCH 15. Elder's Helpline (1090), a joint project of the Bangalore city police and the Nightingales Medical Trust, will bring out a directory of homes for the aged in the city, on April 17, the second anniversary of the helpline. The Commissioner of Police, Bangalore, will release the directory, which will provide information about old-age homes including location, facilities, and charges. S. Premkumar Raja, founder trustee of Nightingales Medical Trust, told The Hindu that a majority of senior citizens who called the helpline asked for information about shelters. As many as 559 calls were received between January and December last year for such information. "Many elderly persons call us to ask about old-age homes. So we decided to come out with a directory that will make things easier for them. The directory is free of cost and will be available only to senior citizens after April 17 at the Elder's Helpline office on the premises of the office of the Police Commissioner," he said. Apart from location and phone numbers, the directory will contain details about homes run by a voluntary organisation or private or charitable agencies, facilities provided including security arrangements, criteria for admission, deposit, and charges, Mr. Raja said. "We had information about some homes, and on the basis of that we inspected about 60 homes in the city. Now we are in the process of compiling the information," he said. Mr. Raja said that the directory would also give information about how to choose a home best suited for a particular individual. The managements of some of the homes would make a presentation at the programme on April 17, he added. More information is available on phone (1090/22943226).
