dated March 17, 1954: P.S.P. Govt. for T.-C.

Mr. Pattom Thanu Pillai, the 68-year-old leader of the State Praja Socialist Party in the new State Legislature, was appointed Chief Minister of Travancore-Cochin on March 16 by His Highness the Rajpramukh. This followed an interview he had with the Rajpramukh at the Kaudiar Palace at 10 a.m. Mr. Thanu Pillai was sworn in by the Rajpramukh at the Palace at 2-20 p.m. Mr. Pillai then proceeded to the Secretariat and assumed charge of his office as Chief Minister. This follows some dramatic developments, consequent on the unambiguous offer of Mr. Panampilli Govinda Menon, leader of the Congress Legislature Party, on March 15 night, of support to and co-operation with the Praja Socialist Party if they formed a Ministry for the State. The Rajpramukh summoned Mr. Pillai on March 16 at 10 a.m. for an interview and, after ascertaining from him that he was confident of forming a stable Ministry in the State, appointed him as the Chief Minister. After his appointment as Chief Minister, Mr. Pattom Thanu Pillai told The Hindu in an interview that he was quite confident of forming a stable Ministry and he was expecting the support and co-operation not only of the Congress, but of other parties as well in the Legislature.
