Tense moments at CMC Hospital

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MARCH 16 . Tension prevailed at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital here this morning, when members of the AdiTamizhar Peravai refused to accept the body of a girl Jeniffer alias Indirani (13) of Thottipalayam near Karumathampatti who immolated herself on Monday.

According to police, the Peravai activists alleged that the girl resorted to the extreme step after a woman sub-inspector admonished her. The girl was admonished for reportedly raising an alarm because of which some illicit distillers, who were gambling, escaped from police. The peravai activists demanded action against the sub-inspector including registering a case under the provisions of the SC/ST Act for allegedly abusing the girl by her caste name.

However, the police contended that there was no high-handedness on the part of the police officer. Even as the revenue and police officials held negotiations with the agitating peravai activists, the protest tension prevailed at the hospital. Following assurance from the revenue and police officials that action would be initiated against the sub-inspector concerned, the activists accepted the body late in the evening.
