By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY, MARCH 16. The district administration is preparing itself for the elections to the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assembly, S.N. Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer, has said.

Addressing presspersons here today, Mr. Jayaram said a special team headed by the Assistant Commissioner had been formed to ensure the implementation of the model code of conduct. He said meetings would be convened with political party leaders and candidates to inform them about the need to follow the code of conduct and the action that would follow in case of any violation.

Defacing of walls and public property would be dealt with seriously and stern action would be initiated against those found violating the rules, he said. Political parties could use polling material only after obtaining permission from the authorities concerned.

Mr. Jayaram said electronic voting machines (EVMs) were being used for the first time in the district. Demonstrations on using them would be held at the village level.

Mr. Jayaram said 14.58 voters (7.28 lakh men and 7.30 lakh women) would exercise their franchise in the district.
