KOTTAYAM, MARCH 16. The Forest Department has initiated action against 12 persons who were taken into custody while constructing an unauthorised conduit for taking water from the deep inside of the protected Mathikettan Sholai. After inspecting the area today, the Munnar DFO, Rajan Sehgal, told The Hindu that the channels under construction at the sholai would be destroyed and refilled within the next few days. The activities deep inside the sholai were noticed on March 13 when the Forests officials took the workers into custody. They had found that a perennial source in the forest area was being exploited unauthorised by a section of the local people. In fact, they had cleared the area to construct two channels. The area was cleared for a width of up to 1.2 m for more than one km length, the work being taken up simultaneously from both the ends -- one the water source deep inside the forests and the other, the Thondimalai area to where the water was being taken.
