Annual convocation held

NEW DELHI MARCH 16. The annual convocation of the Institute of Marketing and Management (IMM) was held at the Park Hotel here this past week. The Lieutenant-Governor, Vijai Kapoor, who was the chief guest at the function, handed over degrees to 107 business management students. He also gave away trophies to the toppers of MBA.

Others who addressed the convocation included the State Trading Corporation's CMD, Arvind Pandalai, IMM's Executive President, Jagjit Singh, IMM's Secretary General, Gaganjit Singh, and journalist, Pratibha Advani.

`Give fruits to children'

NEW DELHI MARCH 16. In view of the supply of sub-standard meals in schools, the Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) has appealed to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to consider distribution of only fruits among children. The Executive President of HCFI, K.K.Aggarwal, said fruits would be 100 per cent safe. "A fruit diet will ensure that no child suffers from food poisoning,'' he added.

Meet on waste management

NEW DELHI MARCH 16. A two-day national workshop on "Biomedical waste management status analysis and planning for the future'' is being organised by the Centre for Environment Education here from Wednesday.

A follow up of the five regional consultations workshops that were conducted by the CEE in the East, North-east, West and Southern region of India between December and March, the regional workshops were supported by the Hazardous Substances Management Division under the Ministry of Environment and Forest. The workshops analysed the current status of the compliance to the Biomedical Waste Rules of 1998.

The national workshop would be discussing in a holistic manner various aspects such as technologies, practice, education and training programme for doctors, nurses, paramedical and house keeping staff related to biomedical waste management.

The workshop will inaugurated be the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Pradipto Ghosh, and the Director of the CEE, Kartikeya Sarabhai, will preside over the function.


Directory released

NEW DELHI MARCH 16. A voluminous directory on the food processing industry and trade was released by the Secretary of the Planning Commission, R.R.Shah, at the inaugural ceremony of Aahar 2004 exhibition last week. Aimed at the expanding business in the food sector, the book puts together a wealth of data and information complete with the rules and regulations governing the food industry. Published by the Confederation of Indian Food Trade Industry (CIFTI), the food wing of the federation, the manual has the particulars of nearly 6,000 companies and organisations, manufacturers, exporters and importers among others. A profile on the Indian food processing industry is also included in the manual, with details of the Indian Government agencies also being given.

Former MLA

quits Congress

REWA MARCH 16 . Former legislator of Madhya Pradesh and scion of the erstwhile Royal family of Rewa, Pushparaj Singh, today resigned from the Congress for `continuous neglect' of party workers by the Congress leadership.

The three-time legislator sent his resignation to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi saying he was distressed because despite complaints within the party, the grievances were not being redressed.

Mr Singh regretted that despite his family being affiliated to Congress for last three generations and having close relations with former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, he, along with many others, was being sidelined by the present Congress leadership.

Death sentence

for murder

KATHIHAR (BIHAR) MARCH 16. Additional district and sessions judge, Katihar has awarded capital punishment to three accused in a case of murder and looting.

The Judge Ravindra Prakash Sinha found the accused Kartik Mandal, Sikander Mahto and Avadhesh Mandal guilty of looting valuables worth nearly Rs. 10,000 from a shop and killing the shop owner's son at Naya Chowk under Kursaila police station area in Katihar district about three years back.

Of the three convicted, one was nabbed by the local people while two others were arrested by police.

Two other miscreants, involved in the incident, are still absconding.

One killed in U.P. clash

MUZZAFFARPUR MARCH 16. One person was killed and nine seriously injured when two groups clashed over a piece of land in a village in the district, a senior police official said today.

Two groups belonging to the same community clashed at Buana village yesterday over a land dispute, Superintendent of Police G K Goswami told PTI here. "Firearms were used in the clash," he added.

About 30 people have been arrested in this connection and firearms seized, Mr. Goswami said.

Additional force was deployed in the area and the situation was now under control, he added.

Man kills sister,

shoots self

SAGAR MARCH 16 . In a horrifying incident, 25-year-old son of a police officer opened fire, from a licensed weapon, killing his sister and wounding his wife before shooting himself at their residence here.

Police said that Anita died on the spot while Ashok, the son of Anuppur District's Superintendent J P Ahirwar, died at the district hospital late last night.

A family dispute allegedly resulted in the youth attacking his family at about 9-30 p.m. Vijaylakshmi sustained a gunshot wound to the left arm and was admitted to the infirmary.

On receiving news of the incident, Additional Superintendent R S Kaul, City Police Superintendent Pankaj Pandey and others rushed to the spot.

YC accused of

code violation

RANCHI MARCH 16 . The Ranchi district administration has filed an FIR against the Jharkhand Youth Congress for violating model code of conduct during yesterday's rally here.

According to the police, the complaint had been filed under the Prevention of Defacing of Property Act.

Sadar Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Vinoy Kumar complained on behalf of the administration.

The party has been accused of putting banners and flags on public property without seeking permission from the administration.
