MYSORE, MARCH 16. The Deputy Commissioner, Kumar G. Naik, has appealed to all political parties to desist from using plastic publicity material as it has been banned by the Election Commission. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Naik said the model code of conduct was in force and the officials would monitor the campaign of political parties to detect violations of the code. The election expenses of candidates would also come under scrutiny from the time they filed nomination papers. However, the ongoing drought relief works in the district would not be affected. The election notification for the Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections would be issued on March 31 and the filing of nominations would commence the same day. The last date for filing of nominations was April 7, and the papers would be scrutinised on April 8. The last date for withdrawal of nominations was April 10, the Deputy Commissioner added. In all, there were 14,73,037 voters in the district and the authorities were in the process of ascertaining the number of sensitive and hypersensitive booths in conjunction with the police. Mr. Kumar Naik said electronic voting machines (EVMs) would be used in the coming elections and already the district administration was imparting training on its use at the gram panchayat level which would continue for at least a week. The authorities had launched a drive to issue the voter ID cards. So far, more than 80 per cent of the registered voters had been issued them, and the entire process would be completed in due course, he said.
