`Advocates must agitate for welfare of society'
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI,
MARCH 16.
Advocates have a social duty to perform and they must agitate for the welfare of society, said Justice P. Shanmugam, who retired as judge of the Madras High Court last week.
Attributing his success as a lawyer, court officer and judge to his honesty and discipline, the mild-mannered judge, speaking at a farewell function, organised by the Madras High Court Advocates Association here today, said advocates too had an equally important role in almost all good judgments.
The Chief Justice, B. Subhashan Reddy, said the services of Mr. Justice Shanmugam would be utilised in other ways and said he was an example of a perfect judicial officer.
Mr. Justice Reddy said that as on today only about 300 habeas corpus petitions were pending in the High Court. Special benches had to be constituted and about 10 public prosecutors specially assigned to argue the matters to achieve the record disposal rate in HCP matters.
