KOCHI, MARCH 16. The Kochi regional unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 27.3 metric tonnes of red sandalwood valued at Rs 1.10 crores today. The contraband was allegedly exported by Sastha Exim, a Coimbatore-based firm to a company based in Singapore, by declaring it as blended black tea. Acting on a tip-off, he agency sleuths followed up the matter with the shipping agency concerned. It was suspected that an organised racket was behind the smuggling, DRI sources said. The wood is an item covered under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
